Abbott Ireland Nutrition Division Cootehill Cavan

Established in 1975, Abbott Nutrition in Ireland is the largest powder manufacturing facility to produce infant formulae within the Abbott Corporation worldwide. Approximately 1,000 dairy farms in Ireland and Northern Ireland supply quality milk to the Cootehill facility which processes 500,000 litres per day. This secure supply together with Ireland’s reputation as a green, clean environment is of significant strategic importance to Abbott Nutrition.

The role of a Reliability Engineer at Abbott

Reporting into the Senior Leadership team this role has the primary objective of managing any risk to the achievement of the site’s strategic objectives in the areas of asset capability, quality, production and environmental health and safety.

This role is ideal for something with a an Continuous Improvement mindset and is critical to the overall Operations of the Site.

Primary Function / Goals / Objectives

Manage risk to the achievement of an organization’s strategic objectives in the areas of environmental health and safety, asset capability, quality and production.

  • With the Engineering Manager define relevant KPIs, cognisant of current site objectives and how these objectives cascade down to departmental objectives.

  • Services, troubleshoots, and solves engineering problems with processes or equipment already in operation to maximise uptime / Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and other relevant KPIs.

  • Guides efforts to ensure reliability and maintainability of equipment, processes, utilities, facilities, controls and safety/security systems.

  • Interact collaboratively within cross-functional teams including engineering, manufacturing, quality, technical and materials with the objective of delivering key site projects focused on operations, utilities and facilities areas.

  • S/he must have ability to problem solve and have the attributes to promote this behavior when driving improvements to equipment inefficiencies and projects. Use lean six sigma tools to drive root cause identification and corrective/preventative measures.

  • Embed lean thinking and OPEX principles across the engineering department. Lead efforts to Identify waste and subsequent projects (CIP) to eliminate this waste delivering quantifiable € savings.

  • Optimises the Predictive vs Preventative maintenance routine mix, utilising the current Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to define, track and manage specific KPIs

  • The Reliability Engineer will guide efforts to track and reduce carbon emissions, maximising energy efficiency across the site focusing on scope 1 emissions (Utilities) and scope 2 emissions (imported electricity)

  • Participates in the development of design and installation specifications along with commissioning plans. Participates in the development of criteria for and evaluation of equipment and technical MRO suppliers and technical maintenance service providers. Develops acceptance tests and inspection criteria.

  • Participates in the final check-out of new installations. This includes factory and site acceptance testing that will assure adherence to functional specifications.

Education Required:

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering or equivalent discipline

Knowledge

  • Minimum of 3 years relevant experience in Engineering.

  • Prior experience in a manufacturing environment is essential, or in-depth knowledge of key ultilities, e.g. steam, refrigeration, compressed air, HVAC etc.

  • Knowledge of an Automated Manufacturing Environment with a good solid understanding of FMCG and Utility equipment is essential

  • The ability to organize, motivate and understand people [Contractors, Equipment Suppliers and team members]
