Los Alamos National Laboratory Institutional Space Planner (Planner 4) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Infrastructure Program and Planning Office (IPPO) within the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Infrastructure and Capital Projects (ALDICP) has an exciting opportunity for an Institutional Space Planner to support the Laboratory's Institutional Space Management team. The team's objective is to ensure effective utilization of onsite and offsite office space in support of the Laboratory's growing workforce and mission needs. The Planner will report directly to the Institutional Space Program Manager to establish and execute methods to ascertain and track space utilization, ensure efficient use of space, and aid in future space planning needs/projects, including coordination and relocation.

Job duties will require the application of project management principles, use of space management and reservations software, space management utilization and allocation analyses, and experience in the development of presentations and data reports. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong customer service skills and practices to work with management across the Laboratory to identify current, future, and temporary space needs and creative solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work directly with organizations to identify current and future office space needs and perform workspace planning for optimum space utilization.

  • Perform space assessments, walkdowns, and other physical space reviews to evaluate and provide real time reports of space utilizations and allocations.

  • Provide recommendations to enhance current office space utilization and/or need for additional office space.

  • Help manage day-to-day space requests: evaluate requests in the context of the Laboratory's mission objectives and space management policy; determine appropriate actions; interface with relevant parties; and track progress and ensure timely conclusion.

  • Help develop and maintain an institutional Office Space Plan to address new and emerging needs as well as forecasted occupancy of new office facilities.

  • Work with resources to provide data analysis and reports by systematically applying statistical and logical techniques to evaluate data.

  • Prepare and present high-quality written and graphic communications in all assigned areas.

  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with organizational Points of Contact for space.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated expert level experience with project, program, or space planning and management.

  • Expertise with analysis and forecasting skills, critical and strategic thinking, planning, and organizing.

  • Demonstrated advanced skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending creative solutions on problems affecting projects and programs.

  • Demonstrated significant experience interacting effectively with all levels of personnel, building trust, gaining consensus, and resolving conflicts.

  • Demonstrated excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Expertise with databases and information management systems and application of desktop software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated advanced experience with project management processes and tools.

  • Expert level knowledge and application of space management and space planning practices, including experience with space management systems such as Archibus.

  • Significant experience leading/facilitating problem solving teams.

  • Ability to read and interpret architectural plans, specifications, and floor plan drawings.

  • Familiarity with Los Alamos National Laboratory missions, operations, and facilities.

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is a 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (https://directives.nnsa.doe.gov/supplemental-directive/sd-0206-0002) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Incentive Compensation Program: Position is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program. You must be in an eligible position for a minimum of 3 months, before July 1st and remain in an eligible position as of the end of the fiscal year, September 30th. The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
