Description

As the Senior Data Scientist you will lead research and development projects using operations data that leads to data driven recommendations to be used by Maintenance and Transportation Operations divisions and to the transit industry. Use statistical methods to perform analytical research about service performance, operating conditions, maintenance failures, and other areas of interest within Operations. Identify and work with the Grants Department on grant proposals to support Operations research initiatives. Define data collection, cleaning, and other preprocessing needs in order to have sufficient data for in-depth analysis and work with Senior Data Engineer Analyst to implement processes that meet those requirements. Keep up-to-date on transit industry trends and local operating conditions in order to provide appropriate context for analytical findings.

This position requires being in the office 4 days a week with one day of remote work allowed.

Interviews for this position will begin in June 2024.

Serve as a good steward of TriMet by regularly utilizing our transit system to maintain a strong and current understanding of customers’ experiences and of TriMet’s product and service offerings.

Essential Functions

  1. Provides context on all analyses by measuring and normalizing for operating conditions and trends. Delivers indepth analysis of current operations and trends using operations data, raw or preprocessed data. Uses advanced predictive analytics, computational methods, and modeling and simulation techniques to identify and mitigate deficiencies in agency operations. Implements experiments in consultation with Operation stakeholders as needed. Lead small teams of analysts in developing analytical experiments to test new business practices.

    1. Distributes findings with recommendations in multiple formats to management and executives. Share analyzes using appropriate visualizations, including graphical, geospatial, and interactive presentations. Submits articles for peer review annually.

    2. Secures grant funding for research ideas or for prototyping new technologies. Prepares appropriate soliciation documentation and submits for approval. Manages budgets related to current research studies.

    3. Stays up-to-date on transit industry best practices and trends to identify directions for future business process improvement and analysis. Regularly reviews APTA, FTA, FRA, US DOT, and other regulatory bodies for upcoming changes to operational performance measures.

    4. Works with Data Engineer Analyst to operationalize and automate key analyzes for recurrent and ongoing reporting. Identifies and validates new data sources for inclusion in routine analytical processes.

    5. Forms and maintains relationships with colleges and universities to assist with research projects. Provides data to external stakeholders as requested. Works with industry and TriMet to develop and test technology solutions at the agency. Works with external researchers on publishable research that directly impacts agency operations.

Position Requirements

A Bachelor's Degree is required, with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Statistics, Computer Science, Business or related field being preferred.

Four (4) years of total credited experience is required.

Two (2) years of experience conducting research, performing statistical data analysis, business system and process improvement analysis and presenting recommendations is required.

Salary Range

Minimum: $81,948.00

Maximum: $122,923.00

Salary offers will be determined by a candidate’s education, training and relevant experience. Any final offer of employment will fall within the range stated above. For transparency, we choose to list the full available grade range, however, TriMet’s salary administration process will ultimately determine the final salary offered.
